Reading with a Leader

Every third-grade student receives their very own dictionary in October. Teachers use the dictionaries in their curriculum to encourage independent learning at school and as a resource for their homework.

Each trimester, we recognize elementary students who have demonstrated hard work and perseverance in achieving a personal or academic goal. This program encourages students to remain dedicated and motivated in their educational journey.

K-Kids is a student-led club with members, officers, committee chairs and adult advisors. Clubs are in schools, youth organizations, libraries, congregations, and other community-based locations. The host school or organization provides a meeting space for the club and an adult advisor to guide its students. A local Kiwanis club often sponsors a K-Kids club, paying its fees and providing a volunteer Kiwanis advisor.

To promote literacy, every first and second-grade student receives a book. We have partnered with Oak Harbor Public Schools and community leaders to record a video of the book being read.  Students can read along with the video, or they can read their book independently.
